By means of a notice dated 4th October 2018, the regulator for gaming in Malta, the Malta Gaming Authority (“MGA”)  published details on its Sandbox Framework for the acceptance of crypto currencies and the use of blockchain /dlt within the gaming industry.  These guidelines have been published following a consultation document published previously.

The framework will be divided into two different stages: as of 1 January 2019 the MGA will accept applications for the use of crypto currencies as a means of payment (VFAs and Virtual Tokens, in terms of the Virtual Financial Assets Act). In a second phase, the sandbox framework will be extended to applications for the use of certain type of blockchain / distributed ledger technology.
